The uniqueness of the Stemn Series lies in its custom Stemn bracket. This exposed piece of hardware enables the creation of strong, high-end furniture that can ship flat and assemble at home without compromising on strength or durability. The furniture is versatile, with customizable wood finish, bracket color, and upholstery, fitting a multitude of design environments. The packaging, developed in-house, focuses on making home assembly as intuitive and satisfying as the product itself.
Fyrn Stemn is a system of hardware, parts, and pieces that uses the strength of metal while maintaining the warmth of wood and upholstery. The patented brackets, rather than concealing the structural joints, become a unique aesthetic element. The anodized aluminum brackets allow for rapid construction using minimal amounts of North American hardwoods. To achieve scalable manufacturing in San Francisco, Fyrn also designed and built proprietary equipment.
The Stemn Series solves many challenges plaguing the furniture industry. Inventory is stored in component parts, eliminating the need for large warehouses. The furniture is high-quality, ships flat, and has quick lead times and a reduced carbon footprint. The design and intuitive packaging create an enjoyable assembly experience. The furniture is 100 percent repairable, not disposable, and proprietary parts and manufacturing processes enable local production without exploiting workers or the planet’s resources.
Developed through an iterative design process, the objectives were to create a line of furniture built to last a lifetime, easy to warehouse & ship, fun to assemble, repairable and sustainable. Digital modeling preceded prototypes tested for strength through controlled methods. Collected data was compared by graphs and the bracket evolved with more than 30 iterations. Pilot builds in busy restaurants further proved durability. Surveys and focus groups were conducted to develop and refine the assembly process.
The project started in January of 2012 in San Francisco, CA. Prototypes were initially tested in restaurant environments in the Bay Area beginning in 2014. After many design iterations and further development, the product became publicly available for sale in January of 2017. It was presented at ICFF in New York in May of 2017. Extensions of the line utilizing the same hardware and system are currently underway, some of which will be debuted at ICFF in New York in May, 2018.
The Stemn Series was awarded Silver in A' Furniture Design Award in 2018. This prestigious award is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that illustrate outstanding expertise and innovation. These designs, admired for their strong technical characteristics and splendid artistic skill, showcase a remarkable level of excellence and introduce positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
